"Give a Hoot" Owl Pillow...

I mentioned yesterday I am trying to pare down Christmas this year, then we are going to celebrate Christmas more fully in June when we meet together for a family reunion at the beach. Getting a "little something" for everyone is still a bit of an undertaking, however, because we currently have 12 kids/kids-in-law and 12 grandchildren. {That number is always in flux!} Trying to come up with 24 "little" presents is proving to be a challenge! ;o)

The other day I fell back on a pattern I created some time ago. Little Taitum {our youngest grandchild -- just a month and a half old} needed a little something to open, so I made her a "Give a Hoot" Owl Pillow...

As you know, I often name the "Give a Hoot" Pillows I make. The name "Mattie" came to mind when I created this feminine version.

Taitum is a little young to have a pillow in her crib, but when she gets older I hope Mattie will comfort her and remind her that her grandparents love her!

Go here to find out how you can make one of these "Give a Hoot" pillows.

{Now I'm going back to my less-than-glamorous life -- time to mop the kitchen floor.}

Bella...

Yesterday I made the last item for a package that I'm sending off for the wee little grandbaby -- Miss O. -- due very soon. Early last summer we had an invasion of U.F.O.'s (Unidentified Flying Owls) when I made an owl pillow for each of our grandchildren. It has become obvious that little Miss O. will need one too, so I whipped one up yesterday. I'd like you to meet...

Bella

I love Bella. She's a flashy dresser.

I'm quite sure she will fit in nicely in Miss O.'s sure-to-be fashionable life.

An Invasion of U.F.O.s...

We've had an invasion of U.F.O.s. You heard me right. We've been inundated by a flock of Unbelievable Flying Owls. The last few days I've been working on six more "Give a Hoot" pillows for our adorable grandchildren who just happen to be featured below.

Last week I doodled an owl while talking on the phone and several hours later my "Give a Hoot" doodle was reborn in fabric in the form of a pillow. Since then six more owls have joined the flock -- one for each of our grandkiddos above. These owls will be flying to their new homes later this week.

I've already introduced you to Gladys.

Now I'd like you to meet Gus,

Hank,

Mandy,

Flo,

Sid,

and Broderick.

I can just imagine the sleepy heads of our little ones resting on the soft minky fabric on the backs of these little pillows. This pillow and a book in the hand or a DVD on the TV will be the perfect accompaniment for a mid-day rest. Go here to find out how to draw up your own pattern to make these "Give a Hoot" pillows!

"Give a Hoot" Pillow

It all started with this drawing that I doodled while I was talking on the phone yesterday. We'll affectionately call her Gladys. From the look of Gladys' eyes she's a little stressed and strung out. She could use a long hot bath, some soothing music and perhaps a sedative or two. In any case, from this sketch -- sans the psycho eyes -- an idea was born.

I followed this process.
First, I collected every artist's basic tools: a pencil, paper and a salad bowl...

a yardstick...

a cereal bowl...

and back to the salad bowl.

A snip here -- a tuck there. The sweet hum-drum of a sewing machine. A little stuffing. And an hour or so later Gladys is reborn in fabric. Fresh as a daisy and raring to go!

I used scrap fabric for the front of this little "Give a Hoot" Pillow. Some Minky fabric on the back finishes her off and makes her perfectly soft for little heads.

The half circle cutout of Glady's ears would be perfect to surround a little neck. I can picture a little one, one her back, reading her favorite book with this "Give a Hoot" pillow wrapping around her and propping up her head.

The process really was that easy.
You should try it!
