Repurposing Fabric... Kitchen Curtains

I like to change out my kitchen and informal dining area window coverings often. I usually end up sewing them, but finding fabrics that I like has always been a challenge. Traditional drapery fabric is just too "heavy", but I have a difficult time finding cotton fabrics that I like too. This last week I went looking for fabric for those four windows. I tried online and local fabric stores first. When those options failed, I stopped by a less likely source and found what I was searching for. Traditionally Target isn't known for its line of fabrics, but if if you think with an unconventional bent you'll find it's a treasure trove. And often the fabric is priced more reasonably than fabric off the bolt. Here's what I found the other day...

I hoped to find a fabric with a linen look -- a looser weave and a more organic texture. I found just what I was searching for in this tablecloth fabric at Target.

I've also been known to buy sheets and draperies to repurpose as well. In fact I went to Target to check out their ready-made curtains, thinking I could repurpose those to fit my less-than-conventional-size windows. I didn't see any options there, so that's when I started looking in the bedding and dining areas for fabric.

I've really enjoyed these partial window coverings. They are high enough that no one can see in, but they let the sun in throughout the day. We like rooms with a lot of light, so they are perfect for us.

For the informal dining area that is just off the kitchen I chose a complimentary fabric with a little more color also found at Target...

I usually put the same fabric in the nook area as I do the kitchen, but this time I wanted this eat-in area to have a little more color...

This fabric has the same organic texture and linen look as the fabric in the kitchen window...

Of course Target isn't the only home goods store you could visit to find fabric. Any store that sells tablecloths, sheets, or curtains would be a good resource for repurposed fabric. What's more I have a lot of both fabrics left over. I'm seeing a tote in the flowered vine fabric in the future!
